Don’t give the car keys back to those “who drove us into the ditch” in the first place. It was 8 years of Republican control of government that is responsible for the massive economic downturn and loss of jobs. Let’s keep the Democratic Party in control and give them more time to turn things around and dig us out of the hole created by Bush/Cheney policies.

“…Obama said Republicans are betting that between now and the Nov. 2 elections, Americans will forget the Republican economic policies that led to the recession. He said Republicans have opposed virtually everything he has done to help the economy, and have proposed solutions that have only made the problem worse. That philosophy didn’t work out so well for middle-class families all across America,” Obama told a cheering crowd at a labor gathering. “It didn’t work out so well for our country. All it did was rack up record deficits and result in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.”

Not even college basketball fans will be able to escape the health care hubbub this year. The National Republican Campaign Committee just released a post-vote ad that will target Democratic lawmakers who vote for health care reform. The spot will air during March Madness basketball games and calls on specific congressmen to “stop the madness.” For Capitol Hill interns, the madness has already started. The Hill reports that House phone lines were deluged with health care calls on Tuesday, prompting the House’s chief administrative officer to warn offices that “our phone system is nearing capacity.” Talking Points Memo says the thousands of callers are targeting House Democrats who haven’t made up their minds on health care reform. Those are some of the same representatives the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has in its sights as it prepares for its biggest election season ever. The Washington Post reports that after spending a record-breaking amount of money on campaigns in 2008, the Chamber has doubled its budget and could spend more on 2010 races (largely in support of Republican candidates) than either political party.

The LIBERTYVILLE TOWNSHIP DEMOCRATIC ORGANIZATION (LTDO) is a grassroots volunteer organization that has been meeting and working together for over a decade.

We often hear residents say “I thought I was the only Democrat in my neighborhood”. We can assure you that is not the case. While the Republicans have traditionally held a majority in this area, much has changed in the past ten years and is still changing.

In the 2008 election, Barack Obama won Lake County with 59.3% (177,242) of the vote. In Libertyville Township, Barack received 54% of the vote. Democratic US Senator Dick Durbin received 63% of the vote. There are plenty of Democrats in Libertyville Township!

WHAT DO WE DO?

We Support Candidates! We support local, state and national Democratic candidates in a variety of ways.

We Help Get Out the Vote! We walk the streets and help get out the vote at election time.

We Publish a Newsletter! Our newsletter is published twice a year and delivered via first class mail to all LTDO members.

We Host Events! We host many events including Candidate Forums, “Let’s Talk Politics” citizen forums, Volunteer Meet & Greets, Holiday parties, Get Out the Vote (GOTV) events and more.

We Meet Our Neighbors. Typically just before elections, we walk our precincts distributing campaign material and chatting with our neighbors.

We Host a Website! We host www.LibertyvilleDems.org and publish news, event announcements, candidate profiles and important links to other resources.

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

Become a Member! For a minimum donation of $10.00, you can become an official member, receive our bi-annual newsletter and help us elect Democrats! Support our efforts with your donation. Visit our website for more information.

Get Registered to Vote! If you’re not registered, get registered so you can participate in our Democracy.

Vote in Every Election for Democratic Candidates! Many citizens skip voting in the Primary elections but they are very important especially to local State Rep and Senate candidates. The Right to Vote is cherished. Exercise your right and vote!

Become a Volunteer! Whether you have a couple of hours or would like to spend more time, we need volunteers for a variety of work especially before elections. Volunteer Interests include such activities as 1) event coordination, 2) fundraising, 3) recruitment/training, 3) telephone calling, 4) door to door canvassing, 5) distributing candidate literature, 6) assisting with mailings and MORE…. Even displaying a candidate’s sign in your front yard helps elect Democrats!

Become a Precinct Committeeman/woman! For those citizens willing to dedicate more time and commitment, consider becoming a precinct committeeman/woman. Each precinct in Libertyville Township has one elected/appoint precinct committeeman/woman. Duties are primarily related to representing the Democratic party at the precinct level. There’s lots of documentation available on this subject, contact an LTDO Officer for more info.

Become involved in helping us implementing our goals! The LTDO is a small volunteer group of dedicated Township citizens. We need talented and committed people to help achieve our goals. So come on out, attend a couple of meetings and see if you’re interested helping us build the LTDO into an effective political organization helping Democrats at all levels of government.

OUR EVENTS

FEBRUARY. During primary elections, we canvass neighborhoods and help get out the vote for our candidates.

MARCH. During mid-term and presidential election years, we host our Volunteer Meet & Greet in March to get everyone revved up for the upcoming general election.

MAY. Let’s Talk Politics residents issues forum.

JUNE/JULY. In June/July we march in both the Libertyville/Mundelein Days Parade and co-host a booth at these Festivals. We share the booths at the events with the 10th Congressional District Democrats (TenthDems.org) and the 8th Congressional District Democrats and Independents (IllijoisEddi.org).

SEPTEMBER. We are planning a Candidate Forum.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER. During general elections, we canvass neighborhoods and help get out the vote for our candidates and, of course, we vote!

DECEMBER. During the holidays, we host the LTDO Holiday Party. This is a potluck party. In 2009, we had 12 candidates from State, County and local offices attend.

ELECTION RESULTS

All the past election results for Lake County and Libertyville Township are available for viewing online at the Lake County Clerks office.

You can visit the Voter Services site at: http://www.lakecountyil.gov/CountyClerk/ElectionResults/Default.htm

LTDO STRUCTURE

The Libertyville Township Democrats have four Officers: Chairman, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. We meet the second WEDNESDAY of every month.

On MAR 3, 2010, the following officers were elected to 2 year terms. Congratulations to everyone.

Chairman: Tom Jurgens
Vice-Chair: Monica Johnson
Treasurer: Amy Solomonson
Secretary: Del Parra

NEXT STEPS

We are limited by people resources, we need more volunteers and committed residents to become involved and help us achieve our goals. Here are some recommendations for you going forward.

Learn more. Visit the local Democratic organization websites, increase your awareness of the political process, candidates, officer holders, election rules, etc.

Attend events and meet other local Democratic activist. Come to our meetings. Meet people.

Become a Member. Join our organization and receive our newsletter to keep abreast of our activities and other local political news.

Volunteer some time. Help us with our activities. Contribute time to a worthy cause. Be one of the few that participates.

Contribute. Even if you don’t have time, you can contribute to the cause by donating to our organization.
